THE CROSSING
This altar represents my mother, Catholic and Latin, leaves everything to emigrate to the United States. They met on the ship Coronia. We are drifting in the lifeboat. An Aztec story of can about sacrifice can be read on the edges.
RESETTLEMENT
This Irish Protestant altar represents my Dad and another move, Maryland to Texas. The text is written by me at age 5, and shows distress about how our pet was getting there. Angels can be seen in the waters, looking out for us.
THE SECRET
It became apparent with this move to Texas, that Mexicans were not looked at favorably. This part of my heritage was now a dark and ugly secret. A place I called home was unraveling.
SPECULATION
This move was suppose to bring happiness and "a place of belonging". Instead we arrive to Peru in the mist of a government overthrow. People that looked American were in danger. I could not call this home.
CONFINEMENT
The beautiful Inca walls represent a reality with this move. To shield you from the immense poverty and danger, you were walled in.
REALIZATION
The all girl "British" school, proved to be another challenge especially with a Texan accent.
SISTERS
We were 4 sisters, 4 years apart in age. Our friendship and love was our solace. A Mexican milagro of a heart is showcased.
FLIGHT
Our next move, Venezuela brought hope to escape the danger of Peru and difficulty at school. We also took with us the memories of the rich culture in Peru.
LIMBO
4 years have passed since our move to South America. The realization that we were now a people without a "home" was significant. The displacement I felt was significant.
PROSPERITY
Venezuela was prosperous and much safer. But poverty was within an eye-shot of our hill top house.
EUPHORIA
A truly international school, trips to the Caribbean beaches brought much happiness and ideology of a future.
THE DECISION
Graduation has forced the decision to choose a future and eventual home. I choose Canada. The mythical Aztec dog, Xolo is present to aid me
THE DREAM
Travel back and forth to Canada (and wherever my family resided) to pursue "the dream" continued for the next 5 years.
DISPLACEMENT
By age 25 I had lived in 22 houses. This work has a drawing of a house I did as a 5 year old. Stories that triggered the memories of the floor plans I drew of all the houses, along with all my visas, entrance stamps and passport pictures fill the background.
SOLACE
My momentos went with me everywhere, as it grew in size, my memory of places and people diminished, but it gave me solace of an identity and place of belonging.
FULFILLMENT
This represents my first 5 years in Canada, feeling for the first time, that I was growing roots.
REFLECTION
A carefully written letter from my dying great grandmother is a realization that my connection with my heritage in Mexico was also dying.
RECONCILIATION
A move back to my birthplace Mexico City brings chaos and a realization of true displacement. I felt like a foreigner.
CONTENTMENT
A final move and settlement to Canada, brings peace and tranquility and a hope for a future.

This work was completed after this body of work. I created this image as to showcase my idea of home.
JOURNEY - ARTIST STATEMENT
This is autobiographical journey continues with the Journey from Mavourneen Recycled. The first draft of this work was in the form of 27 Mixed media collages that measured 30"x24". It was exhibited as a one-person show at the Thunder Bay Art Gallery in 2003. I then digitized, manipulated and further researched this body. This second body, and the one show above was created exclusively using Photoshop. The resulting exhibit of these large scale works were exhibited at the Mclaughlin Art Gallery in Oshawa in 2005. Both exhibits feature more objects and images from my box of momentos that I accumulated over the first 25 years of my life. This box gave me solace as it housed the broken memories from 22 moves through 5 countries before settling in my present home of Thunder Bay, Ontario. I photographed, scanned, analyzed and researched the contents of the box and gave further content to the images.
